Education in Puerto Rico:

from a teacher's perspective

We interviewed Mr. Alexander Soto Román, who is an instructor and graduate student in English Education in University of Puerto Rico. In this video, Mr. Soto Román shared his life and experience when hurricane Maria attacked the island. He also talked about how the educational system was impacted by hurricane Maria and what were/are the dillemas that teachers and students encountered after the nature disaster.

I created a group on WhatsApp as an effort for them to reach out, cause I knew they were going back home and didn’t have much signal of the internet, but I figured if everybody is on the same group of WhatsApp at least some people would relay the message.

After the hurricane, I think about a month past, the university opened again, immediately teaching was very strange because you had to pretend classes could continue when reality what students faced outside the class was super different.

Highlights of the interview

So you would go to the classroom, and start teaching and you would see immediately students motivation was kind of low, kind of down, because they were thinking about what was happening outside.
